Jake's Grilled Tri-Tip

Jake's Grilled Tri-Tip

The tri-tip is probably one of the lesser known cuts of meat out there and almost definitely the most underrated.  This thick and well marbled slice of heaven can be prepared in a number of different ways but we like to keep things simple here, so we’re going to provide you our family-friendly and time-friendly recipe which makes grilling the tri-cut perfect for any meal and for any occasion any day.

A lot of hardcore carnivores out there will tell you that the quality of the meat is the most important factor when grilling and while we don't necessarily disagree, we often find that people don’t always have the access or means to procure these meats and that’s perfectly okay, especially when you’re using a seasoning like Jake’s.  So, whether you get your tri-tip at your local butchers or the nearest Trader Joe’s this easy recipe is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2-3 Lbs. Tri-Tip
  • Jake’s Seasoning

METHOD (FOR MEDIUM RARE):

Trim the meat of skin and excess fat (or better yet, have the butcher do it for you!).

Shake Jake’s Seasoning to coat the meat evenly then gently massage in the seasoning.  Repeat on the other side of the meat.

For best results, refrigerate the seasoned meat overnight in the fridge but make sure you season the meat at least an hour prior to grilling.

Prior to grilling, pull the meat out of the fridge and let rest until room temperature (45 minutes to an hour).

Heat grill to high (gas or charcoal) then place the roast on the grill and sear one side for 5-7 minutes.  Turn and sear the other side for another 5-7 minutes.

Once seared, turn the heat down to medium high (or move the meat to a cooler part of your charcoal grill) and cook for another 5-7 minutes on each side or until your thermometer reaches 120 degrees at the thickest part of the mat.

Rest the meat for 10-15 minutes before carving.  When carving, first cut the roast in half at the center of the angle, then slice each cut of meat against the grain.

And that’s it!  Serve to family and friends and watch as their faces light up at the amazing flavor of this delicious meal.
